Johan H. Roeland

Johan Roeland is teacher in Media, Religion and Culture at VU University Amsterdam. He is theologian by training, has obtained his PhD in anthropology, worked in a sociological department and feels comfortable at his current multidisciplinary, multireligious theological department. Johan’s principal research interests are: religious changes in Europe, evangelicalism, youth and religion, (social) media and religion, popular culture and religion, and conservative Christianity.

He published in Journal of Contemporary Religion, European Journal of Cultural Studies, Fieldwork in Religion, Journal of Beliefs and Values, Annual Review of the Sociology of Religion, and in the Dutch journals Tijdschrift voor Communicatiewetenschap (Journal for Communication Studies) and Sociologie (Sociology). Johan is director of the master Theology & Religious Studies at VU University Amsterdam.
